Wild Harvesting

We’ve all heard the terms organic, natural, fair-trade and eco-friendly, but what about Wild-Harvest? Wild Harvest encompasses the above well-known terms and much more. Basically, a product that has been Wild Harvested means it has been collected by hand from a ‘wild’ or unmanaged ecosystem. Similar to the way hunter-gatherers would forage for food in ancient times, Wild-Harvesting involves getting out into nature and picking native foods.

Wild Harvest encompasses all of the benefits we look for in food today. It is:
  • Natural and organic – meaning we are satisfying our health concerns by avoiding harmful chemicals applied by conventional agriculture.
  • It is ethical and fair trade – because Wild Harvested foods require the expert, traditional knowledge of Indigenous people to locate their ancient food sources.
  • It is healthy and nutritious – because the fruits are grown in their natural state , allowing them to develop their higher order compounds such as Antioxidants and Vitamin C.
WIld-harvested acai berry

Wild-Harvest has made a resurgence in recent years due to increased awareness of the nutritional and culinary benefits of native foods. In terms of nutritional benefits, native foods grow in untouched environments where they have access to all essential ingredients needed develop true superfood qualities. Crystal clear water, clean air and rich soils. A fine example of Wild Harvested, native foods is the famous Acai berry from Brazil, Wild Harvested from the Amazon Rainforest and famous for its high levels of Antioxidants.

Wild harvesting of native foods such as Acai is not only beneficial for our health but also socially. It is culturally, spiritually and ethically significant for Indigenous communities, creating work opportunities and access to traditional lands. Wild harvesting is also environmentally sustainable because it ensures the protection and care of native plants naturally established in that area.

Modern Production

The Amazon Polpas Company was born in 2005 from the dream of sharing açaí with Brazil and the world. Since then, we have been faithful to our purpose: to bring energy and more health to the people, through the benefits of açaí.

The production structure is formed by qualified professionals and equipment with capacity for more than 220 tons / day in three modern separate industrial plants.

The pasteurization process is important to guarantee a safe and healthy product and after pasteurization, the product is stored and shipped at -20oC. Upon arrival in the UK, the storage continues at -20oC until ready for consumption.

Other producers opt for a double pasteurization process - at source and at destination. Thi causes a degradation in the quality of the açaí and a change from the characteristic purple colour to a muddy, brown colour.

Amazon Polpas, aware of its position in the food production chain and its importance in terms of social, economic and environmental aspects, establishes its commitment to implement a corporate culture focused on minimizing impacts to the environment at minimum levels.

Benefits of Açaí
1. They're Nutrient-Dense
Acai berries have a unique nutritional profile for a fruit, as they're somewhat high in fat and low in sugar.
100 grams of frozen fruit pulp has the following nutritional breakdown:
  • Calories: 70
  • Fat: 5 grams
  • Saturated fat: 1.5 grams
  • Carbs: 4 grams
  • Sugar: 2 grams
  • Fibre 2 grams
  • Vitamin A: 15% of the RDI
  • Calcium: 2% of the RDI
Acai berries also contain some other trace minerals, including chromium, zinc, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus.

2. Anthocyanins
Responsible for the purple colour of açaí and are powerful antioxidants. In fact, açaí is loaded with antioxidants which neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals throughout the body. If free radicals are not neutralized by antioxidants, they can damage cells and lead to a number of diseases, including diabetes, cancer and heart disease.
Acai berries have an incredibly high amount of antioxidants, edging out other antioxidant-rich fruits like blueberries and cranberries. The antioxidant content of foods is typically measured by an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) score - 100 grams of açaí frozen pulp has an ORAC of 15,405, whereas the same amount of blueberries has a score of 4,669. This antioxidant activity comes from a number of plant compounds in acai, including anthocyanins.

3. They May Improve Cholesterol Levels
Animal studies have shown that acai helps improve cholesterol levels by decreasing total and LDL cholesterol. It is expected to have a similar effect in humans.
While more research is needed, it's possible that the anthocyanins in acai could be responsible for their positive impact on cholesterol levels, since studies have linked this plant compound to improvements in HDL and LDL cholesterol.
In addition, acai contains plant sterols, which prevent cholesterol from being absorbed by your body.

4. They May Have a Possible Anti-Cancer Effect
While no one food is a magic shield against cancer, some foods are known to stop cancer cells from forming and spreading. Both test-tube and animal studies have revealed this sort of anti-cancer effect in acai. In mice, acai pulp has reduced the incidence of colon and bladder cancer.

SUMMARY:
Thanks to their high antioxidant content, acai berries have many potential health benefits.
They're loaded with powerful plant compounds that act as antioxidants and could have benefits for your brain, heart and overall health.
They also deliver healthy fats and fibre, making them a generally healthy food.
Other benefits of açaí production are social and ecological. . It is culturally, spiritually and ethically significant for Indigenous communities, creating work opportunities and access to traditional lands. It is also environmentally sustainable because it ensures the protection and care of native plants by the local population – it being their main livelihood.

Products
Amazon açaí is available as a pure, organic pulp, or mixed with strawberry, banana or guarana.

A very popular format is the 200g pot of sorbet mix, with one of the three mixes – strawberry, banana or guarana. In the top section of the pot is a granola mix. This gives a crunch to the cream-like texture of the açaí. This format is sold in supermarkets and stores as an individual portion. If eaten at breakfast, it will keep you going most of the day. It is full of energy and protein.

A similar mix is available in 500g pots. This can be shared between 2 or 3 people, or even 4 if mixed with fruit pieces such as strawberry or banana. This is also sold in supermarkets and stores.

Pure açaí or sorbet mix is also available in 5kg or 10kg buckets. This is an ideal format for bars and restaurants, where they can prepare individual servings of 150g to 200g – either pure or mixed with fruit or nuts.

A novelty is the açaí protein energy stick, which is ideal for before or after workouts at the gym or yoga academy.

We also sell other exotic fruit in pulp format, ideal for making smoothies or blending exotic cocktails. We presently work with Pitaya (Dragon Fruit), Cajá, Cupuaçú (or Cupuassu) and Graviola (Soursop), which are the most exotic and have the most beneficial effects.

We are presently setting up a distribution network in the UK and if you are interested in working with us to distribute this marvellous product in niche markets, then please e-mail us at acai@bhw-associates.co.uk. We can provide samples for tasting and market testing.

We are especially interested in working with supermarkets, stores, gyms and yoga academies. Please feel free to contact us for further information and commercial details.
